Week 1

Hello Temperance Participants,

Week 1 is almost in the books. Tonight we will have a little camaraderie dinner at Red Lobster. Please feel free to share any thoughts in the comments sections or by creating a post, especially if you cannot make it tonight.

Personally, I am feeling pretty good so far and I have been keeping busy which helps pass the time. The first two weekends are always rough so I understand if you newbies are suffering a bit. I made a list of stuff I should/need to get done during this time of clarity. You might be interested in doing the same if you haven't already. I find it always helps to have things you need to accomplish written down.

Anyways, enough of me trying to be mature and adultish. See you tonight.

We're Back

This blog was beginning to smell like a dusty, old book in the basement of some wretched library in Berwyn or Oak Park so it's time get her off that damp shelf and back into prime condition. The cover has been dusted and rebound, stinky pages aired out and even flicked off a couple dust mites or whatever those things are that inhabit old books. Oh, those are nerds, like Mike Tallarico.

Anyways, I would like to officially welcome the Temperance class of 2012 - our largest yet (6). Anthony Garcia, Executive Vice President and Director of Sales is returning for his third consecutive Temperance. No one has championed the cause more than Anthony and I would like to sincerely thank him for all his hard work.

Some of our new members have dabbled in mini-Temperance ventures in the past that whet their appetites for the real deal. Mike Tallarico and Nancy Rodriguez will begin their first official Temperance campaigns in 2012. Welcome and thank you participating.

Stephanie Rivera and Edna Romero decided to jump in cold turkey after hearing many triumphant Temperance stories. Thank you for giving this a shot, you definitely won't regret it and you will most definitely want to be back next year.

Most of you know the main points already, but here is a refresher: No meat or Alcohol during the starting January 9, 2012. Temperance will be broken Saturday March 3, 2012. We usually break the meat portion one week before, but I will confirm once I meet with EVP Garcia. You may use this time to achieve any life goals you wish to strive for in the short or long term future. Temperance is an honor system - we cannot see each other all day, everyday so we do this not only for ourselves but for the good of the group. The sense of accomplishment you feel March 3 will be great enough to bring you back for years to come - Good Luck to all!

Weekend Recap

Here's how one's life can go from future success story to disaster in one weekend.

Step 1: Don't drink for two months.
Step 2: Drink heavily for an entire weekend after those two months.

Friday night was great. We went to the Forever Irish event at the Navy Pier ballroom on stomachs full of coors light and double fish-o-filet goodness. I never seen so many gross and beautiful Irish women in one place. I also never thought I would see one of my friends standing at front of the stage staring at a 12 year old Irish girl doing an Irish jig.....for five minutes he did this. That almost wasn't as cool as me losing my phone in a cab later that night. Yet that was topped by Anthony Garcia putting a sticker in a young gentleman's hair. One shining moment was when I yelled to group of gross girls sitting on the ballroom foyer steps that they looked like an international gathering of women's curlers.

I dont really feel like writing much more so I will be brief: Saturday I met my new worst enemy which is called Vodka and Tonic. Then my second worst enemy, myself, lost his debit card, which I can't call the bank to cancel since I lost my phone on Friday.

Hi, I'm Drunk

How much we drank last night will never be known. Right now I am enjoying my first hangover.

The Finish Lines

This will be the final sober post. First of all, I would like to congratulate Anthony Garcia on his 2nd successful completion of Temperance. He is the third member of an elite club to complete multiple Temperance journeys. Thanks to Michael Tallarico for undertaking his first Temperance and also for his insightful health related posts. Thanks to Kevin for giving it your best shot. You did well for eight days and were proud of you Sir! Several people at my work did level one Temperances - which consisted of giving up meat or pop - thanks and good job to you as well! Finally, thanks to all three people who read this during the past two months.

Tomorrow the three happiest people in Chicago will congregate around 3PM to end the madness. We will begin the traditional Breaking of Temperance by sharing our Temperance reflections: things we have learned and achieved during the last two months. Freshly poured Coors Lights will be bubbling on the table as we share these reflections. We will then clink a most glorious cheers to our sacrifices and then take the sip we have been waiting for since day one. The year's most delicious beer will be consumed (most likely within 30 seconds) thus bringing us back into our normal, alcohol soaked world.

Hopefully we don't get arrested or die of alcohol poisoning tomorrow.

Reflections

Garcia and I agree that T2010 has been much tougher than T2009. No meat in addition to the usual no alcohol made this a special journey. For myself, significant life style changes will result from T2010. Meat consumption will be reduced to mainly weekends and special occasions, which will be very difficult but achievable. I also plan on eliminating items from my diet that contain artificial sugars, at least ones I can purchase from the store.

None of this will be easy but I think the point of Temperance is to train yourself to accept any challenge and concur it. Right now the challenge at hand is just to get through this week. As expected this week is going by slower than Joe Snyder's journey through puberty, which like T2010 is still ongoing.

72 hours from now we will be intoxicated for the first time since New Years. I really don't know what to expect from the night. It will undoubtedly be staggering drunk and of course full of humorous moments. No doubt I will have to roast Tallarico and I should remind him that last time we roasted (on NYE)I heated him up in front of his GF, so I hope he is ready to defend his honor.

It will be great to see Kevin getting drunk, acting weird and telling us how he doesn't belong on Earth. We will not miss a beat and I guarantee we make it through the entire night just off the pure excitement to make up for so much lost time. Please Jesus, Buddha, Allah, Moses, Great Spirit, Mother Earth, Joseph Smith,L. Ron Hubbard, Zoroaster or whoever the fuck is in charge of the world, let Friday come quickly and let it go down as one of the greatest nights of our lives.

Last Sober Weekend

Today, in all likelihood, is the last completely sober weekend. No longer will I be able to be so productive on a Saturday and Sunday. For the next ten months I will be waking up at least one day each weekend trying to recollect what I did and where I did it the night before. How much money did I spend and how much do I have left? Who is this stunningly beautiful girl next to me?

Ok, so that last question I never really get to ask, but you get the point. This week will see the gradual decline from responsibilty to irresponsibilty. It is well deserved after these two months of sacrafice, however it is almost sad to see it go so quickly. Full weekend degeneration really won't begin until the weather gets nice out, but the foundation will be laid on Friday. And I cannot fucking wait.
